Christmas in Rye 2026: festive things to do and where to stay

Rye does not need fake snow to look good in December.

The old streets, small shops, pubs and crooked houses already do most of the work. Add winter lights, seasonal food and a reason to step inside somewhere warm and the town becomes particularly good at Christmas without needing to turn itself into a theme park.

For 2026, some festive activity is already confirmed, while the full Rye Christmas Festival programme has not yet been announced by the organiser.

Christmas at Lamb House

Christmas at Lamb House is confirmed from Saturday 5 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027.

For 2026, the house is being transformed into ‘Mallards’, inspired by E. F. Benson’s Mapp & Lucia novels, with handcrafted decorations and seasonal greenery throughout.

It is also opening during the Twixmas period from 27 December to 3 January for the first time.

This is exactly the sort of Rye Christmas activity we like because it belongs to the place rather than being a generic festive attraction dropped into it.

St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival

Rye News lists the St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival from 27 November 2026.

Check the church’s own programme for confirmed opening times, concerts and special events closer to the date.

What about the Rye Christmas Festival?

At the time of writing, the official Rye Christmas Festival website still states that the 2025 event took a break and does not show a confirmed 2026 festival programme.

Visit Rye has said it hopes the festival will return in 2026, but hope is not the same as confirmation, so check the organiser before planning a trip around it.

Do your Christmas shopping in Rye

Rye is very good for the sort of Christmas shopping where you come home with fewer things but better ones.

Independent shops, galleries, books, antiques, interiors, local food and makers give you a much better chance of finding something with a story than another generic gift set.

Do not try to turn the town into a shopping route. Pick a few streets and wander.

Eat somewhere warm and stay too long

December gives Rye’s pubs and restaurants permission to become part of the itinerary.

Book the dinner you actually want. Find somewhere for lunch with no plan immediately afterwards. Try local seafood, wine and produce rather than treating meals as gaps between attractions.

If you are visiting around Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day, check opening directly and book early. Many places operate special menus or close completely.

Walk the old town after dark

Rye changes quickly once the day visitors leave and the winter light goes.

Walk Mermaid Street, Church Square and the High Street once the lamps are on. The town is compact enough that you can do this before dinner without turning it into a formal walking tour.

This is one of those occasions where not having much of a plan is the plan.

Add the coast to Christmas

Rye at Christmas works even better when you can leave it for a few hours.

Camber Sands gives you a huge winter beach. Rye Harbour gives you wildlife and open space. Pett Level gives you a quieter shoreline.

A cold walk followed by a warm pub or cottage is not an accidental part of the break. It is one of the reasons to come.

Where to stay for Christmas in Rye

Stay in Rye if you want the town, restaurants and evening atmosphere on the doorstep.

Stay in Camber if you want festive Rye close by but prefer to wake up near the beach.

Choose Winchelsea or Pett Level if you want somewhere quieter with easy access back into Rye.
