This unique and charming holiday cottage sits behind one of Rye’s most iconic High Street shops. Tucked behind the main drag this architecturally important building has been completely renovated. The Playhouse is home to the quirky finds of its delightful owners. You will find an eye for colour, modern comforts, mixed in with playful vintage signs. Altogether, it creates a fabulous base from which to explore.
Inside the property
When you first enter via a narrow passageway off the High Street, there is a cloakroom to your immediate right. The double-height sitting room hits you with light from the imposing giant windows. The beautiful old beams and brickwork embrace the L-shaped blue velvet sofa and the playful modern artworks. A large Smart TV sits on the retro sideboard if you tire of the local haunts.
A specially commissioned metal staircase with wooden treads leads upstairs (bannisters installed), conveniently lit by a neon sign, that says ‘Upstairs’ beckons to the fabulously appointed bedroom.
As you walk into bedroom, you will see the large upholstered ochre king-sized bed is sumptuously made, with white Egyptian Cotton 400 thread count bedding with goose down duvet and pillows. Beautiful curtains and blinds in soft tones of ochre, pink and grey dress the window. Lie in bed and let the morning sun wash over you – if you can manage to get someone to cross the road and bring the papers, coffee and delicious breakfast from the White House that’s even better!
Across the landing, step down to a large shower room with large fluffy bath sheets.
Local art adorns the walls, a large 90s acid house smiley face can only make you happy, all reflected by the stunning pink Murano glass chandelier that hangs majestically from the central upper beam. A perfect juxtaposition to the original pulley mechanisms, hanging from the rafters.
On the ground floor, the bespoke kitchen allows you to cook up a storm. There is an oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge with a small freezer, and a washer/dryer if needed. The kitchen table has been recycled from the old front door, which in turn leads out onto a small courtyard garden.
Courtyard garden
The garden is styled with a reclaimed bench, metal table and large pots planted up, showing the owners talents as a landscape architect. Their garden shed nods to the influence of Derek Jarman, painted black with yellow frames.
Outside the property and local area
Outside the property are metered bays on the High Street (80p for two hours from meter, or £1 using the Ringo app) for longer, a few minutes walk is Rye Station car park which is £2.90 per day (or you can buy a weekly ticket) or Rye Market Car Park (please note not available on Thursdays – market day!) which is £2.50 for 24 hrs!
Being in the heart of Rye offers you the chance to indulge in some of our finest eateries and boozy boltholes. Restaurants and pubs a-plenty – providing some excellent local produce. Romney Marsh Lamb, Rye bay Scallops, microbreweries and some excellent wine from one of the many local vineyards. Cafes and brunch spots abound amongst the independent shops, the art-house cinema, art galleries and a plethora of antique and vintage shops. All this and you haven’t left Rye. There’s the beach, cultural attractions, sporting facilities and glorious gardens.
All this and more awaits you at The Playhouse.

A wonderful little place to stay in Rye and on the doorstep of great restaurants and quirky little boutique shops. The property was of a high standard with all mod. cons.

This beautiful, stylish house is right in the centre of town. The decor and design is gorgeous. The house was really well equipped and spotlessly clean. We found the administration by Camber Holiday Cottages to be very efficient and helpful. A couple of points to bear in mind if booking. It's quite tricky to park outside to load and unload, but you can occasionally nab a spot outside of shopping hours (parking for your stay is simple in the station carpark). The house is dog friendly, but if you have a pooch like ours that will only pee on grass, you'll need to pop out to the churchyard (2 mins) or there is a nice park a few minutes walk towards the landgate and down the steps/slope!

Beautiful apartment, great location, really loved our stay. Very quick and helpful responses to emails and texts too! Would prefer not to have to strip the beds ourselves for an expensive nightly rate, but a very minor comment to an overall brilliant stay!

Fabulous and quirky accommodation in the heart of Rye. Just walk out your front door and you have a choice of coffee shops and resteraunts. Or bring back food and cook in the spacious kitchen and chill out in the courtyard with a glass of wine.

Absolutely loved our stay here. Everything was perfect and every last detail thought of. The art work adds a special touch. Everyone couldn't do enough to help. Location is amazing and the town is just postcard perfect. About to book another stay this year and cannot wait to go back. A coffee machine would be fab addition!

Very unique and quirky property, great location on the high street close to everything that Rye has to offer. The only thing I think can be improved on is to align check in and check out times with those of other properties/hotels.
