Dog-friendly pubs in Camber and Rye: our recommended places

A dog-friendly pub list goes out of date faster than people expect. A venue can welcome dogs in the bar but not the dining room, accept them at lunch but not dinner, or change a policy for a busy event. This guide is deliberately short. These are our recommended places to check, not every business that has ever appeared under a dog-friendly filter.

Our Camber order is Harry’s at The Gallivant first, then The Owl, then Rye Bay Bar & Grill. Each offers a different type of stop, and each should be contacted directly before you build the day around taking a dog inside.

1. Harry’s at The Gallivant

Harry’s is the polished option when you want the dog-friendly weekend to include a more considered meal. It is The Gallivant’s French brasserie by the sea, with weekend lunch and dinner service currently advertised on its official site.

The important detail is that dog access depends on the space and sitting. Current Camber Holiday Cottages guidance says dogs can be accommodated in the bar and Sitting Room at lunch, with different restrictions later in the day. That is exactly why a direct check matters. Do not book the restaurant, arrive with a dog and assume every table follows the same rule.

Best for: a planned lunch or drink near the western end of Camber. Check: the room you will sit in, the service time, whether food is available there and whether booking is required.

2. The Owl

The Owl is the clearest traditional pub choice in Camber, just over the dunes. Its official site describes a relaxed meal, drinks, local and guest ales, while Visit 1066 Country currently identifies it as dog friendly.

It suits the classic post-beach pattern: walk, return to the cottage to deal with the sand, then head out for food or a drink. The website does not give every practical dog condition, so ask whether dogs are accepted in the area you want and whether any time or family restrictions affect your booking.

Best for: a traditional pub atmosphere and a straightforward Camber evening. Check: table location, food service, child policy if the whole family is coming and current opening times.

3. Rye Bay Bar & Grill

Rye Bay Bar & Grill at Royal William Square is the informal Camber option. Current dog-friendly directories and recent visitor feedback describe it as welcoming to dogs, but its policy is not clearly set out on a full official website. Treat that as a reason to confirm, not as permission to make a permanent promise on its behalf.

It is useful when you want relaxed food and drinks in the village rather than a destination meal. That makes it a practical third recommendation, especially for families or groups whose main event was the beach.

Best for: a casual village stop. Check: current opening hours, whether dogs are accepted inside and whether a table should be booked.

A central Rye option: The Globe Inn Marsh

The Globe Inn Marsh sits on the edge of Rye where the Military Canal meets the River Rother. It is already one of our wider Rye pub suggestions, and CAMRA currently marks it as dog friendly. The official Ramblinns site confirms the pub and food offering, although it does not publish a detailed room-by-room dog policy.

That makes The Globe a sensible place to check when you want to combine a Rye wander with a proper pub stop. Ask whether your dog can sit with you in the area serving food, particularly at a busy weekend sitting.

A reliable Rye Harbour option

William the Conqueror in Rye Harbour is a useful addition when you are already visiting the nature reserve. Its official site explicitly says well-behaved dogs are welcome. There is outdoor seating beside the River Rother and the pub serves food as well as drinks.

Pair it with a morning at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve rather than making a separate journey for one drink. Dogs still need to follow the reserve’s marked lead zones, and muddy paws are a good reason to check where the pub would like you to sit.

Other central Rye options need a fresh check

Rye has more pubs and places to eat than Camber, but dog policies vary sharply. A historic inn may allow dogs in bedrooms or on a patio while excluding them from public rooms. That is why we are not copying a large central Rye list from old articles and presenting it as permanent local knowledge.

Use our wider pubs near Camber Sands guide to understand the different areas, then contact the venue you actually want to visit. If an indoor meal with your dog is essential, ask that exact question. ‘Are you dog friendly?’ is too vague.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Can our dog sit with us in the area where food is served?
  • Does the policy change between lunch and dinner?
  • Do we need to book a dog-friendly table?
  • Are there limits on dog numbers or size?
  • Is there outdoor seating if the indoor area is unavailable?
  • What time does the kitchen stop serving?

Build the pub around the walk

The better plan is walk first, pub second, cottage close by. Staying in Camber means you can get everyone clean and settled before heading out rather than arriving straight from the beach with half the dunes attached.

Browse the dog-friendly cottage collection and choose a base near the kind of evening you actually want. For more options, compare our short breaks in Camber.
