Free things to do near Camber Sands and Rye

A bucket and spade, a picnic and a few hours with nowhere else to be. Some of the nicest days in Camber are the simplest, especially when you have children who are perfectly happy making their own fun.

With the beach, Rye and the surrounding countryside to explore, there is plenty to enjoy without buying an attraction ticket. These are a few ideas for days when you would rather pack some sandwiches and see where the afternoon takes you. You may still need to allow for parking, transport and refreshments, but the activities themselves have no admission charge.

A morning of sandcastles at Camber

The beach is a lovely place to begin. Bring a bucket for the little ones, a ball for anyone with energy to spare and a picnic for when the inevitable “I’m hungry” arrives. A sandcastle with a moat can occupy far more of the morning than you might expect.

For a change, draw a giant noughts-and-crosses board in the sand or follow each other’s footprints. Give other beachgoers plenty of room and stay clear of marked activity areas. There is no need for much equipment, just clothes you do not mind getting sandy.

In autumn, we would keep the outing short enough that everyone is still enjoying themselves when it is time to leave. Bring spare socks and warm layers, check the tides and beach signs, and supervise children near the water. Our parking guide will help with arrival.

A little wildlife watching at Rye Harbour

For a change of scenery, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is free to visit, with donations welcomed. You do not need to know the name of every bird to enjoy watching them. Let children spot something swimming, something flying and something they have never noticed before.

Take your time, stay on open paths and enjoy looking without disturbing the wildlife. As checked on 19 October 2026, the Trust reports a temporary closure around Castle Water, so check current notices before choosing your route.

A wander through Rye with a few things to find

Rye’s streets make a charming setting for a homemade discovery trail. Look for the Landgate, find a cobbled street and let everyone choose their favourite doorway. Mermaid Street is a lovely place to pause and imagine the town in another age.

You could bring a small sketchbook or take a photograph of each discovery. Keep the route easy, with time to sit down along the way. The hills and cobbles need a little care, particularly with pushchairs. This is a wander around public streets; admission to museums and other attractions is separate.

See the coast through a camera

Older children might enjoy choosing a few photographs to remember the holiday by. Set a simple challenge: three colours, an interesting shadow and a view they would like to take home. It gives a familiar walk a fresh purpose, and everyone notices something different.

Our local walks guide has ideas for choosing an outing. Keep to permitted paths and respect the homes and habitats along the way.

A relaxed day from your cottage

One easy combination is a morning on the sands, lunch back at your cottage and a short wander around Rye afterwards. You can change the order with the weather, or happily leave the second outing until tomorrow.

If the rain stays, have a look at our rainy-day ideas, checking any admission costs before you go. For somewhere to make yourselves at home, explore our October half-term cottages. A kitchen for family meals and somewhere comfortable to put your feet up are a lovely starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rye Harbour Nature Reserve free?

Yes. Sussex Wildlife Trust says the reserve is free to visit and welcomes donations. Check current access notices before setting out.

Does a free beach day include parking?

No. Free activities do not mean free parking or transport. Check the charges for your chosen car park or journey separately.

What can we do without buying attraction tickets?

Try beach games, a walk on open reserve paths, a homemade trail through Rye or a photo challenge. Food, travel and optional indoor attractions may still cost extra.
