October half term is one of the easiest times to like Camber Sands.
The beach has room again. The dunes feel wilder. Rye is still lively without being summer-busy, and the whole stretch of coast starts to suit the sort of days where you walk until everyone is hungry, find somewhere warm for lunch and come back to a cottage with sandy shoes and no real need to go out again.
For 2026, the main East Sussex school holiday runs from 24 October to 1 November, while Kent schools are generally off from 26 to 30 October. That gives families a useful overlap for a short coastal break without having to wait until Christmas.
And, crucially, there is enough nearby to fill the week without turning every day into an expedition.
Our half-term rule
Plan one proper thing each day, not five. The best Camber breaks still leave time for the beach, a slow breakfast and changing your mind because the weather suddenly improved.
Start with Camber Sands while everyone else is checking the forecast
October is not beach-weather in the summer sense. That is exactly why we like it.
You get the scale of Camber without needing to arrive before breakfast to find a patch of sand. Wrap up, take something warm to drink and use the beach as the anchor point for the break rather than a place you only visit if the sun is out.
Children still dig, climb the dunes, race along the waterline and collect half the beach in their pockets. Dogs get more freedom as seasonal restrictions ease. Give Rye half a day, then stay longer than planned
Rye works brilliantly at half term because the town gives you options.
If it is dry, wander Mermaid Street, Church Square and the old citadel. If the rain turns up, move between shops, cafés, galleries, Rye Castle Museum, Lamb House and Kino Rye without the day falling apart.
For children, history lands better when it feels physical. Towers, old walls, narrow streets and stories about smugglers are generally an easier sell than a long museum label.

Make Rye Harbour your wildlife day
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is particularly good in autumn because the season gives you something different to look for.
The Discovery Centre is a useful starting point with children, especially when you want the day to have some structure without committing to hours outside. In October 2026, Sussex Wildlife Trust has already listed family and wildlife activities around the half-term period, including a free family drop-in on 26 October and Wildlife Watch activity on 27 October.
The reserve itself is flat, open and easy to scale up or down depending on energy levels. Do twenty minutes and a hot chocolate. Do several miles. Both count.
Add a little Halloween without making the whole break about pumpkins
Half term runs straight into Halloween in 2026, so there are naturally a few darker, stranger ways to spend an evening.
Lamb House has announced candlelight haunted tours from 27 to 31 October 2026, which fits Rye almost suspiciously well. Winchelsea’s 1066 Festival also runs through October and finishes on 31 October, giving you a more historical route into the week.

Do not spend the week refreshing three weather apps.
October on the coast often means mixed days rather than completely lost ones. Rain for an hour can become a bright afternoon. Wind can make the beach more fun. Grey skies are not a crisis.

Take one day trip, not five
Camber is well placed for days out, but that does not mean you need to spend half term in the car.
If you want one bigger outing, a day trip to Dungeness gives you a complete change of mood with shingle, lighthouses, big skies and the strange landscape around the power station. Discover Winchelsea and Pett Level which are closer and quieter. Hastings gives you more traditional family attractions if the children need a day with more obvious entertainment.
Pick the one that fits your family and leave the others for another stay.
Our simple three-day half-term plan
Day one: arrive and do almost nothing
Check in, walk the beach, find food and let everybody settle. Starting a holiday with an itinerary is rarely the bit anyone remembers fondly.
Day two: Rye plus something indoors
Give Rye the morning, book lunch, choose one attraction and keep the rest loose. If the weather stays good, finish at Camber Sands or Rye Harbour.
Day three: wildlife or a day trip
Head to Rye Harbour, Dungeness or Winchelsea depending on the forecast and the children’s tolerance for another pair of walking shoes.
Where to stay for October half term
Stay in Camber if the beach needs to be part of every day.
Stay in Rye if walking to food, shops and things to do matters most.
Choose Winchelsea or Pett Level if you want somewhere quieter and are happy to drive into Rye when you need it.
For families, the cottage itself matters more in October than it does in July. Look for the practical things: space to dry coats, somewhere comfortable to spend an evening, a decent kitchen, parking and enough room that everybody can disappear for twenty minutes if necessary.
